Benchmark domestic equity indices, Sensex and Nifty, began this week’s trading on a positive note. Both indices maintained upward momentum throughout the session and closed over 0.6 per cent up today. The Sensex increased 567 points to close at 84 thousand 779, while the Nifty advanced 171 points to settle at 25 thousand 966. Meanwhile, the broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed with gains. The Mid-Cap index climbed 0.7 per cent, and the Small-Cap index added half a per cent.
In the Sensex pack, 22 out of 30 companies edged upward. Among the top gainers, Bharti Airtel gained over two and half a per cent, Reliance rose more than 2.2 per cent and Eternal advanced 2.2 per cent. In the top laggards, Kotak Bank lost over 1.7 per cent, Bharat Electronics Limited dropped 1.6 per cent and Infosys fell over 1.3 per cent.
Among the Sectoral indices at the BSE, 19 out of 21 sectors ended in positive territory, except Utilities which remained flat. Among the top gainers, Telecommunication advanced around 2.4 per cent, Oil and Gas rose one and half a per cent and Energy as well as Realty, both added over 1.4 per cent. Whereas Healthcare dipped marginally.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,178 companies advanced and shares of 2,114 companies declined while shares of 210 companies remained unchanged.
