Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, opened on a positive note and closed over 0.4 per cent higher today after a choppy trading session. The Sensex gained 369 points to close at 84 thousand 997, while the Nifty climbed 118 points to settle above the 26,000 mark for the first time this year, ending the session at 26 thousand and 54. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed with gains. The Mid-Cap index added almost 0.7 per cent, and the Small-Cap index ended over half a per cent higher.
In the Sensex pack, 21 out of 30 companies edged upward. Among the top gainers, Adani Ports surged almost 2.8 per cent, NTPC jumped 2.6 per cent and PowerGrid advanced nearly 2.6 per cent. In the top laggards, Bharat Electronics Limited lost over one and half a per cent, Eternal dropped over 1.2 per cent and Mahindra and Mahindra fell over 1.1 per cent.
Among the Sectoral indices at the BSE, 20 out of 21 sectors surged while Auto bucked the trend, dropping over half a percent. In the top gainers, Power rose over 2.7 per cent, Utilities climbed 2.6 per cent, and Oil and Gas advanced more than two and half per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,482 companies advanced and shares of 1,668 companies declined while shares of 175 companies remained unchanged.
