The Supreme Court today directed Wikipedia to remove the name of the victim from its pages in the alleged RG Kar Medical College Hospital rape-murder case in Kolkata. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra issued this direction in the suo motu case taken by the Apex Court regarding the crime.

During the hearing, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta informed the bench that Wikipedia still displayed the victim’s name and photograph. The bench noted that it had previously issued a direction on August 20 to remove the victim’s name and photos from all social media and electronic media platforms. The bench reiterated its directive for Wikipedia to comply with this order.

The Supreme Court also observed that revelations in the status report filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation were disturbing. However, the Court declined to disclose the details provided by the CBI, stating that such disclosures might hinder the investigation. A three-judge bench had, on September 9, requested a fresh status report from the CBI in the case.
