Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) and Lions Club of Agartala organised a plastic-free awareness campaign at Maharajganj Market, urging traders and citizens to avoid single-use plastics, adopt eco-friendly alternatives and support a cleaner, greener and sustainable Tripura.
A special awareness seminar and outreach campaign promoting the reduction of single-use plastic was organised at Banijya Bhavan in Maharajganj Market (MG Bazaar) on Thursday, bringing together traders, citizens and environmental advocates to strengthen public awareness about plastic pollution and encourage sustainable practices across Tripura.
The programme was jointly organised by the Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) and the Lions Club of Agartala under the theme “Say No to Plastic, Welcome a Greener Future.” The initiative aimed to highlight the harmful environmental consequences of disposable plastic products and encourage people to adopt eco-friendly alternatives in their everyday lives.
With plastic waste emerging as a growing environmental concern, the seminar focused on the long-term impact of single-use plastic on soil quality, water bodies, ecosystems and public health. Participants were informed about the risks associated with excessive plastic consumption and the importance of reducing dependence on disposable materials.
Speakers at the programme emphasised that plastic pollution poses a serious challenge to environmental sustainability. They highlighted the need for collective efforts to minimise plastic waste and protect natural resources for future generations.
The awareness campaign also encouraged consumers and traders to gradually replace conventional plastic products with sustainable, reusable and biodegradable alternatives. Participants were urged to make environmentally responsible choices while shopping, packaging goods and conducting everyday commercial activities.
Particular emphasis was placed on the role of markets and business establishments in reducing plastic consumption. As major centres of commercial activity, markets generate significant amounts of packaging and disposable waste. Organisers encouraged traders and shop owners to take the lead by promoting environmentally friendly packaging materials and discouraging the distribution of single-use plastic items.
The campaign highlighted that environmental protection cannot be achieved through government initiatives alone. Active participation from citizens, traders, educational institutions, community organisations and civil society groups is equally important to bring meaningful and lasting changes.
Organisers stressed that individual responsibility and community participation must go hand in hand with government efforts to address plastic pollution. They called upon consumers to avoid unnecessary plastic packaging, carry reusable shopping bags and support businesses that follow environmentally responsible practices.
The seminar also underlined the importance of continuous public awareness programmes in changing consumption habits. According to the organisers, regular outreach activities can help people better understand the environmental consequences of plastic waste and motivate them to adopt sustainable alternatives.
The organisers expressed hope that such initiatives would strengthen the movement towards reducing plastic pollution throughout Tripura. They maintained that small changes in daily habits, when adopted collectively by communities, could make a significant contribution to environmental conservation.

The initiative at MG Bazaar highlighted the importance of involving local markets and communities in environmental protection efforts, reinforcing the message that a greener future begins with responsible choices made by individuals and businesses.
