Russia launched a major missile and drone attack on Kyiv yesterday, killing 16 people and injuring over 100. Ukrainian officials said this was the worst attack on children in the capital since the full-scale invasion began nearly 3.5 years ago.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy earlier reported 14 deaths, but the toll rose after another victim was discovered in the rubble. He said rescue efforts continued into the evening, with dozens still in the hospital.
The Ukrainian rescue service said more than 1,200 police and emergency workers were responding. Explosions shook the city from midnight, lighting up the sky as buildings were hit.
Russia said it targeted military sites and defence-related businesses. It denied hitting civilians, though attacks have increased in recent months in areas far from the front lines.
In response, Kyiv declared today a day of mourning.
