In a political development, senior tribal leader and BJP MLA from Bagma, Rampada Jamatia, was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. The election fills a crucial constitutional position that had remained vacant since December last year following the demise of former Speaker Biswabandhu Sen.
Jamatia’s elevation marks a notable moment in Tripura’s legislative history, as he becomes only the second Speaker from the indigenous community. The first was Sudhanwa Debbarma, who held the post during the 1978 Left Front government led by CPI(M).
