Rampada Jamatia unanimously elected Speaker of Tripura Assembly, filling key constitutional vacancy after Biswabandhu Sen’s demise. Leaders across party lines welcome the decision, highlighting unity, stability, and strengthened democratic functioning in the state legislature.

In a political development, senior tribal leader and BJP MLA from Bagma, Rampada Jamatia, was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. The election fills a crucial constitutional position that had remained vacant since December last year following the demise of former Speaker Biswabandhu Sen.

Jamatia’s elevation marks a notable moment in Tripura’s legislative history, as he becomes only the second Speaker from the indigenous community. The first was Sudhanwa Debbarma, who held the post during the 1978 Left Front government led by CPI(M). The development is being widely seen as a step towards greater tribal representation in key constitutional roles within the state.

The unanimous nature of the election reflects a rare moment of political consensus in the Assembly. Leaders across party lines extended their greetings and expressed confidence in Jamatia’s leadership. Chief Minister Manik Saha congratulated the newly elected Speaker and emphasized the importance of maintaining the dignity and integrity of the House.

In a message shared on social media, Dr. Saha stated, “Heartiest congratulations to Shri Rampada Jamatia ji on his unanimous election as Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. Wishing him success in upholding the House’s dignity with wisdom, fairness, and integrity.” His remarks underline the expectations placed on Jamatia to ensure impartiality and effective legislative functioning.

The formal announcement of the election results was made by Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul, who confirmed that Jamatia’s nomination had received widespread support from members across the political spectrum. The consensus-driven decision is being interpreted as a positive signal for cooperative governance in the state.

Following parliamentary tradition, Jamatia was ceremonially escorted to the Speaker’s chair by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhary, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy, and other senior legislators. The symbolic gesture highlighted unity and respect for democratic norms within the Assembly.

Observers believe that Jamatia’s experience as a senior legislator and tribal leader will play a crucial role in maintaining order and ensuring smooth proceedings in the House. His leadership is expected to be instrumental in addressing complex legislative challenges while safeguarding the rights and voices of all members.

The Deputy Speaker expressed optimism about Jamatia’s tenure, stating that his administrative experience and balanced approach would contribute to efficient functioning and discipline in the Assembly. As Speaker, Jamatia will be responsible for presiding over sessions, ensuring adherence to rules, and facilitating constructive debates.
