The Rajya Sabha today resumed discussion on the Union Budget 2024-2025, and the Budget of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir for 2024-2025. Participating in the discussion, Randeep Singh Surjewala of Congress raised the issues of farmers, poor and unemployment. He said that no provisions were made in the Budget for waiving farmers’ loans. He also said that the government is not providing adequate MSP on food grains to farmers.

Raghav Chaddha of AAP alleged that through this budget, the Government has displeased all sections of the society. He claimed that the tax burden on the common man has increased and rural income growth is at a decadal low. He also raised the issues of inflation and unemployment.

Debashis Samantray of BJD alleged that the regional aspirations of the country have been neglected in the Budget. He also alleged that the Centre has given nothing to Odisha in the Budget.

Mr Samantray alleged that the Budget is like appeasing two states and ignoring States like Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand. Sanjay Yadav of RJD termed the Budget as anti-poor. He said the Budget is silent on employment and employment rate.

Mr Yadav claimed that despite being 5th largest economy in the world, India is in 142nd place among 197 countries in per capita income. He alleged that the Budget has no concrete provisions for the farmers.

Samirul Islam of TMC alleged that the Budget is anti-people. He said that the Budget has neglected the underprivileged in the country, especially in the unorganised sector.

BJP MP Medha Kulkarni lauded the Budget saying Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made ample provisions for Maharashtra. Pointing out budgetary provisions made for cleaning up River Nag in Nagpur and Multa-Mutha in Pune, she said, that since 2014, the Prime Minister has made provisions not just for river Ganga but also for other rivers.

N Shanmugam of DMK, C.V. Shanmugam of AIADMK, Rajni Patil of Congress and others also participated in the debate. Discussion is underway.
