Punjab Kings begin IPL 2026 against Gujarat Titans as coach Ricky Ponting demands a fresh start, stronger squad depth, and improved performance. PBKS aim to build on last season’s success with renewed focus and tactical flexibility.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) are ready to launch their much-anticipated campaign in the Indian Premier League 2026 season with an opening clash against Gujarat Titans at the New International Stadium in New Chandigarh on Tuesday. With renewed energy and a reshaped squad, the franchise is aiming to build on last season’s impressive performance while embracing a fresh start.

Head coach Ricky Ponting has made it clear that past achievements will hold little weight as the new season begins. Despite PBKS finishing at the top of the table last year, Ponting emphasized that the team must reset mentally and approach IPL 2026 with a clean slate.

“It’s nice to reflect on what was a great season for the franchise, but that doesn’t mean anything going into a new year. It’s nil-nil now for everybody. We’ve got to start that all over again,” Ponting stated ahead of the opening match.

This mindset reflects a broader strategic shift within the Punjab Kings camp. The franchise has focused heavily on strengthening its squad depth, ensuring that every role has a capable backup. According to Ponting, this depth could be a defining factor in a long and demanding tournament like the IPL.

“We’ve got the players that we want in certain roles, but we’ve also got a back-up player for most of those players right the way down to our 25th player. I just think overall, we should be stronger,” he added.

The evolution of young players within the squad is another encouraging sign for PBKS. Ponting highlighted the natural growth and increased experience among emerging talents, which could translate into improved performances this season. The coach believes that if the team can unlock its full potential over the next two months, they could surpass last year’s achievements.

“I just think there’s been natural growth in a lot of our players and if we can bring the best out of them over the next two months, starting tomorrow, there’s no reason why our performances can’t be better than last year,” he said.

However, the immediate challenge lies in adapting to match-day conditions. The New Chandigarh pitch is expected to favor batsmen, but recent rain has added uncertainty. Ponting acknowledged that finalizing the playing XI will depend heavily on a last-minute assessment of the surface.

“We have got 25 players to pick from, with a nice balance of overseas players and Indian talent. First and foremost, we have to understand the conditions before we pick the team,” Ponting explained. “It’s just started raining now, so all the covers have gone down outside, so we haven’t actually seen the playing surface for the last couple of days.”

The team management is expected to evaluate the pitch closely before deciding on combinations and impact players, a crucial element under the IPL’s evolving match strategies.

As the countdown to the opening match begins, optimism runs high in the Punjab Kings camp. Ponting expressed confidence in the upgraded squad, particularly praising the improved quality of overseas recruits and the maturity of domestic players.

“We need to start well tomorrow, we need to play well at our home ground, but I honestly feel that we’ve got a better squad than we had last year,” he concluded.
