Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that it will approach the court to seek permission for holding a protest on August 5 after the Lahore administration allegedly failed to respond to the party’s request for organising a peaceful public gathering. The planned protest forms part of a nationwide campaign demanding the release of former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for nearly three years.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Lahore Press Club, PTI Lahore President Mian Akram Usman said the party had formally submitted an application to Lahore Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza requesting permission for a peaceful demonstration. However, according to Usman, no official response has been received from the district administration.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the delay, Usman stated that the party would now seek legal intervention to ensure its constitutional right to hold a peaceful protest. He affirmed that PTI remains committed to carrying forward its August 5 programme despite the administrative silence.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja also addressed the media, raising concerns over the treatment of party founder Imran Khan. Raja alleged that Khan is being kept in solitary confinement and is being denied access to his legal team despite facing nearly 300 legal cases. He further criticised Pakistan’s judicial system, claiming that recent constitutional developments have weakened public confidence in the courts.
Referring to the country’s legal framework, Raja remarked that expecting justice from the courts after the 26th Constitutional Amendment would be unrealistic. He said the nationwide movement planned for August 5 was initiated following a call from Imran Khan and his sisters, expressing confidence that citizens across Pakistan would participate in demonstrations demanding justice and democratic rights.
The decision to launch the nationwide protest campaign was finalised during a recent PTI Parliamentary Committee meeting chaired by Interim Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to party leaders, the movement will include public meetings, demonstrations, and a long march aimed at drawing attention to the party’s demands.
PTI leaders selected August 5 as the launch date because it marks the completion of three years since Imran Khan’s imprisonment. Party officials believe the anniversary symbolises a significant moment in their campaign and hope it will mobilise widespread public participation across the country.
Speaking after the committee meeting, Salman Akram Raja said PTI also decided to consult senior political figures, including Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, before finalising the details of the protest strategy and associated political activities.
During a separate press conference, Interim Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said discussions also focused on the health conditions of Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. He reiterated the party’s concern over what it described as continued injustice against its leadership and called for an end to what PTI considers politically motivated legal actions.
