President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extend Statehood Day greetings to Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur, highlighting cultural heritage, development, and peace amid Manipur’s ongoing challenges in India’s northeastern region.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended warm greetings to the people of Tripura on the occasion of the state’s Statehood Day, while also congratulating the citizens of Meghalaya and Manipur, which share the same historic milestone.

Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur attained full statehood in 1972 following the enactment of the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971, a landmark legislation that reshaped India’s northeastern political landscape. The move marked a significant step toward administrative autonomy, regional development, and cultural recognition for these states.

In a post shared on social media platform X, President Murmu praised the people of the three northeastern states for their contributions to the nation. She highlighted their cultural richness, traditional heritage, and natural beauty, stating that these qualities continue to strengthen India’s social and cultural fabric.

“Warm greetings to the people of Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur on their Statehood Day. These states are blessed with rich cultural legacy, vibrant traditions and extraordinary natural beauty. Their enterprising and talented people have made remarkable contributions to the nation’s progress,” the President said. She further expressed her wish for peace, prosperity, and inclusive development for the residents of the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended greetings, with a special message focusing on Tripura’s developmental journey. In his message, the Prime Minister noted that Tripura represents a unique blend of tradition and modernity and has witnessed transformative changes across various sectors.

“The state has witnessed pioneering transformations in diverse fields, and its people are adding momentum to India’s growth trajectory. I pray that Tripura prospers significantly in the coming times,” Modi wrote on X.

Meanwhile, Manipur continues to face serious challenges. The state has been under President’s Rule since February last year following prolonged ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meitei groups and hill-based Kuki-Zo communities. Since May 2023, the conflict has claimed at least 260 lives and displaced thousands, making peace and reconciliation a pressing priority.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also joined in extending Statehood Day greetings. In a post, he congratulated the people of Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya, acknowledging their cultural diversity and artistic heritage. He described Tripura as a state rich in unique folk arts and expressed hope that it would continue progressing on the path of development and prosperity.
