Praggnanandhaa defeats Gukesh, keeps title hopes alive at Norway Chess 2026

India’s Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu remained in contention for the Norway Chess 2026 title after defeating world champion Gukesh Dommaraju in Round Nine. The victory took Praggnanandhaa to 15 points, just half a point behind leader Wesley, who has 15.5 points after beating Magnus Carlsen in the Armageddon tiebreak following a drawn classical game. Alireza Firouzja is third with 14.5 points after winning his Armageddon game against Vincent Keymer. With one round remaining, the title race remains wide open.
 
In the women’s section, Bibisara Assaubayeva secured the Norway Chess Women 2026 title with a round to spare. She leads the standings with 16.5 points. Zhu Jiner moved to second place with 13 points after defeating India’s Divya Deshmukh, while Anna Muzychuk is third with 12 points.
