Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appreciated the role of Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb regarding the changes made into the definition of pucca houses under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana- Gramin.
The Prime Minister said, the government in Tripura today understands the plight of the poor and is sensitive to their cause.
Giving an example, the Prime Minister said, “When works started on PMAY in Tripura, a problem came up with the official definition of a kutcha house. The previous government had made a system that the house with the roof made of iron sheet will not be considered as a kutcha house. Even if the mud wall and structures inside the house were dilapidated, that house was not considered as raw because of the iron sheet on the roof. As a result, thousands of rural families of Tripura were unable to get benefits under PMAY.”
While appreciating the Chief Minister, the Prime Minister said that Deb had highlighted the issue before him with evidence and subsequently the central government had changed its rules– the definition following which more than 1 lakh 80 thousand poor families of Tripura became eligible to receive pucca house under PMAY.
“So far, more than 50 thousand beneficiaries of Tripura have got pucca houses. Recently, the first installment has also been released to more than one and a half lakh families to build their homes,” he said. The Prime Minister, in his speech, also praised Tripura government’s efforts in taking the welfare schemes to the people; he lauded the state for launching Mukhyamantri Tripura Gram Samriddhi Yojana which is aimed to fulfil the Prime Minister’s vision which he articulated from the ramparts of the Red Fort, of taking the schemes to people and reaching the saturation of the coverage. The scheme will promote tap water for every household, housing, Ayushman coverage, insurance cover, KCC and roads leading to enhanced confidence in the rural population.
