PM Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hold delegation-level talks in Kuala Lumpur, focusing on defence, security, clean energy, semiconductors, and people-to-people ties, marking a major push to strengthen India–Malaysia strategic partnership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held delegation-level talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, marking a significant step toward deepening the comprehensive partnership between India and Malaysia. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including defence, security, agriculture, clean energy, semiconductors, skill development, and capacity building.
Welcoming Prime Minister Modi and the Indian delegation, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the visit as highly meaningful and forward-looking. He acknowledged that while the bilateral relationship is strong, certain concerns need to be addressed through sustained institutional engagement. “We have discussed that there are some issues of concern, which I think need to be addressed by our teams,” he said, underlining the importance of continuous dialogue.
Expressing confidence in the future of India–Malaysia relations, Ibrahim said he expected enhanced collaboration across all fields. He described Prime Minister Modi’s visit as personally significant and reflective of the growing closeness between the two nations. The Malaysian leader’s remarks highlighted a shared commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and strategic ties in an evolving regional and global environment.
Prime Minister Modi thanked his Malaysian counterpart for the warm hospitality and meticulous organisation of the visit. He described the engagements as memorable and emotionally significant, noting the depth of friendship he experienced during the visit. “You have organised the whole event very well. This is something we will remember forever,” he said. Prime Minister Modi added that it was his third visit to Malaysia as Prime Minister and his fourth meeting with Anwar Ibrahim during the latter’s tenure, reflecting continuity and mutual trust at the highest political level.
Highlighting the robust nature of bilateral relations, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the growing cooperation between India and Malaysia in critical sectors such as agriculture, clean energy, defence, and security. He also pointed to emerging areas of collaboration, including semiconductor manufacturing, skill development, and capacity building, which are expected to play a crucial role in shaping future economic and technological partnerships.
The Prime Minister congratulated Malaysia on its successful chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and expressed optimism that India–Malaysia relations would continue to expand within both bilateral and multilateral frameworks. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to working closely with Malaysia to promote regional stability, economic growth, and shared prosperity.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya, the official residence of the Malaysian Prime Minister. The ceremony marked the formal commencement of his official engagements in Malaysia and underscored the importance both nations attach to their bilateral relationship.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the significance of the visit in a post on social media platform X, stating that the ceremonial welcome reaffirmed the enduring bonds connecting India and Malaysia. The MEA emphasised that the two countries share close ties anchored in civilisational, historical, and people-to-people connections, and that wide-ranging discussions were aimed at further cementing the strong bilateral partnership.
India and Malaysia share deep-rooted links shaped by centuries-old civilisational exchanges, shared history, and cultural interactions. The presence of a large and vibrant Indian diaspora in Malaysia, particularly the Tamil community, continues to serve as a vital bridge between the two nations. These people-to-people ties form a strong foundation for diplomatic and economic engagement.
Prime Minister Modi also shared glimpses of his ceremonial welcome at Perdana Putra on social media, highlighting the growing warmth in bilateral relations. He stated that India and Malaysia are deepening a partnership rooted in trust, friendship, and shared aspirations, reflecting a common vision for the future.
Emphasising the cultural connect between the two nations, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the role of the Tamil community in preserving and promoting heritage in Malaysia. He noted the recitation of Tirumurai devotional songs by students from the Malaysia Hindu Sangam, praising the community’s efforts to keep their traditions alive over the years. The gesture symbolised the enduring civilisational and cultural ties that continue to anchor India–Malaysia relations.
