PM Modi marks Pahalgam terror attack anniversary, honoring victims and vowing zero tolerance against terrorism. India remembers 26 civilians killed by Lashkar-e-Taiba, highlights Operation Sindoor retaliation, and reinforces national resolve against cross-border terror threats.

A solemn reminder of loss and resilience marked the anniversary of one of the most brutal terror attacks in recent memory, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the nation’s unwavering stand against terrorism. Speaking on Wednesday, he declared that the designs of terrorists would never succeed, emphasizing that India remains united in grief and determination.

Paying tribute to the 26 civilians who lost their lives in the Pahalgam attack last year, the Prime Minister said their memory would remain etched in the nation’s conscience. He expressed solidarity with the bereaved families, acknowledging the enduring pain caused by the tragedy. His message underscored a broader national sentiment — that India will not bow to terror under any circumstances.

The attack, which took place on April 22, 2025, unfolded in the scenic Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, a destination known for its natural beauty and peaceful environment. Tourists, including families with children, had begun their day like any other, unaware of the horror that was about to strike. What initially sounded like firecrackers soon turned into a nightmare as automatic gunfire echoed through the meadow.

Terrorists linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba carried out the massacre with chilling brutality. Eyewitness accounts later revealed that the attackers lined up unarmed tourists and shot them in cold blood. In a particularly harrowing incident, a woman was spared after witnessing the killing of her husband — reportedly to spread the message of terror. The calculated cruelty of the act highlighted the intent behind the attack: to instill fear and trauma far beyond the immediate victims.

Amid the chaos, acts of courage also emerged. A local pony handler reportedly confronted the attackers, arguing that no religion permits the killing of innocent civilians. His plea was met with fatal violence, as he too was gunned down. Such incidents underscored both the brutality of the attackers and the humanity of those who resisted them, even at the cost of their lives.

The incident triggered widespread condemnation across the globe, with international leaders expressing grief and solidarity with India. Domestically, the attack prompted a swift and decisive response. The Prime Minister granted operational freedom to the armed forces, leading to the launch of Operation Sindoor. Under this operation, precision strikes targeted terror infrastructure in key locations such as Muridke, Bahawalpur, and Muzaffarabad.

Officials noted that the strikes were carefully calibrated, avoiding Pakistani military installations while focusing solely on terror hubs. However, tensions escalated when Pakistan responded with shelling along the border, leading to civilian casualties in areas like Poonch. Fourteen civilians, including a senior official, lost their lives in the cross-border firing. India subsequently retaliated, reportedly targeting multiple defence facilities within Pakistan.

The hunt for those directly responsible for the Pahalgam massacre culminated in Operation Mahadev. Conducted in the dense terrain near Dachigam National Park on the outskirts of Srinagar, the joint operation by the Army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police successfully neutralized the three terrorists involved. Identified as Suleman alias Faizal Jatt, Hamza Afghani, and Zibran, the attackers were tracked through a combination of human intelligence and technological surveillance.

While the elimination of the perpetrators brought a sense of justice, the emotional scars of the tragedy continue to linger. Survivors and families of the victims still grapple with the trauma of that day, a reminder that the consequences of terrorism extend far beyond immediate loss.

The anniversary serves not only as a moment of remembrance but also as a reaffirmation of national resolve. The Prime Minister’s message reinforced a consistent stance — that terrorism, regardless of its form or origin, will be met with firm resistance. As the nation honors the victims, it also renews its commitment to ensuring that such acts of violence do not go unanswered.
