PM Modi and top leaders greet civil servants on Civil Services Day, praising their role in governance, nation-building, and public service while highlighting their commitment to excellence, integrity, innovation, and inclusive development across India.

Civil servants across the country were acknowledged on Tuesday as national leaders highlighted their critical role in governance and public service, marking the occasion of Civil Services Day with messages of appreciation and encouragement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to civil servants, emphasizing their contribution to nation-building and urging them to continue working with excellence, compassion, and innovation. In a message shared on social media platform X, he described the day as an opportunity to reaffirm commitment toward good governance and inclusive development.

He noted that the work of civil servants spans from grassroots-level implementation to high-level policy formulation, directly impacting millions of lives across the country. Their dedication, he said, plays a crucial role in driving India’s progress and ensuring that governance remains effective and citizen-focused.

President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her greetings, commending civil servants for their role in strengthening public institutions and ensuring responsive governance. She highlighted the importance of innovative and future-oriented policymaking, along with effective implementation, in improving the quality of life for citizens.

In her statement, the President emphasized that as the nation moves forward with renewed aspirations, the integrity and empathy of civil servants will remain essential in bridging societal gaps, fostering inclusivity, and reinforcing trust between the government and the public.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the dedication of civil servants in implementing policies and maintaining administrative efficiency. He stated that their commitment to integrity and service is vital for strengthening governance and supporting the country’s development goals.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari also paid tribute to civil service professionals, praising their tireless efforts in shaping the nation’s growth. In his message, he described them as the backbone of a resilient and progressive India, whose work continues to inspire trust and drive meaningful change.

Observed annually on April 21, Civil Services Day serves as a reminder of the indispensable role played by India’s administrative machinery. The day recognizes the contributions of civil servants in ensuring the smooth functioning of governance and in translating policies into tangible outcomes for citizens.

The observance traces its origins to 2006, when the Government of India first began celebrating the day at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The date holds historical significance, marking the address delivered in 1947 by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to newly appointed civil service officers. In his speech, Patel famously referred to civil servants as the “Steel Frame of India,” underlining their central role in maintaining the unity and integrity of the nation.

Over the years, Civil Services Day has evolved into an important platform for recognizing excellence in public administration, encouraging innovation, and sharing best practices among officers. It also serves as a moment of reflection on the responsibilities and challenges faced by civil servants in an increasingly complex governance landscape.

As India continues to pursue rapid economic growth and social development, the role of civil servants remains more significant than ever. Their ability to adapt to emerging challenges, implement citizen-centric policies, and uphold ethical standards will be key to ensuring sustainable and inclusive progress.
