Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid homage to Freedom Fighter and Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu K. Kamaraj on his birth anniversary. Mr Modi said he was at the forefront of India’s freedom struggle and provided invaluable leadership in the formative years of the country’s journey after Independence. The Prime Minister remarked that his noble ideals and emphasis on social justice inspire everyone.
Born in 1903, Kamaraj served as Chief Minister of the erstwhile Madras State and later as President of the Indian National Congress. He played a pivotal role in national politics.
A champion of education, Kamaraj introduced free education and the mid-day meal scheme in schools. His birth anniversary is observed as Education Development Day in Tamil Nadu, honouring his enduring legacy.
In recognition of his service to the nation, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1976.
