Maharashtra Day, commonly known as Maharashtra Diwas, is celebrated to mark the bifurcation of the Bombay state on linguistic basis into two states: Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The Bombay Reorganisation Act in 1960 bifurcated the Bombay State into two separate states namely, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
