PM Modi congratulated Singapore’s new Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on his electoral victory. With PAP securing 87 seats, India looks forward to strengthening its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Singapore, covering trade, defence, and innovation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended warm congratulations to Singapore’s newly re-elected Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, following the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) sweeping victory in the recent general elections. The PAP, Singapore’s long-standing ruling party, secured its 14th consecutive mandate by winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats and increasing its vote share to an impressive 65.6%, up from 61.2% in the 2020 elections.

PM Modi took to the social media platform X to convey his message of goodwill and appreciation for the deep-rooted bilateral relationship between India and Singapore. He wrote:
“Heartiest congratulations, Lawrence Wong, on your resounding victory in the general elections. India and Singapore share a strong and multifaceted partnership, underpinned by close people-to-people ties. I look forward to continue working closely with you to further advance our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”

Lawrence Wong, who assumed the role of Prime Minister after the long tenure of Lee Hsien Loong, acknowledged the significant public support with humility. In his own post on X, Wong stated:
“Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team.”

The congratulatory exchange underscores the growing depth of India-Singapore relations. The two nations share a historic and dynamic partnership that was formally upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during PM Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024. This partnership encompasses key sectors such as trade, defence cooperation, digital innovation, fintech, urban development, and education.

Over the past decade, PM Modi has demonstrated India’s commitment to strengthening this relationship through frequent high-level engagements. Since 2014, he has visited Singapore five times, participating in bilateral meetings, regional summits, and landmark public events. Among these were his keynote address at the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogue in June 2018—a first for an Indian Prime Minister—and his trailblazing appearance as the first Head of Government to speak at the Singapore FinTech Festival in November 2018.

As Lawrence Wong begins his tenure with a reinforced mandate, both nations appear poised to continue their strategic alignment and deepen cooperation on regional and global issues. PM Modi’s congratulatory note signals India’s enthusiasm for sustained collaboration and mutual progress with Singapore under Wong’s leadership.
