Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday attended a unique ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ programme at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park in Delhi, organised to mark the 110th birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
The Bharatiya Jana Sangh is regarded as the political precursor to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The programme brought together devotional music, contemporary musical arrangements and modern stage production, reflecting the growing popularity of a new format of devotional gatherings, particularly among young audiences.
During the event, Prime Minister Modi was seen seated among attendees and listening to devotional performances. He also clapped along with the performers and interacted warmly with people present at the programme.
Sharing his reaction on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi described the event as “Bhajan Clubbing in Delhi. Spectacular!”
The programme attracted a large gathering of devotees, youth and cultural enthusiasts. It featured live renditions of bhajans dedicated to Lord Ram, Lord Krishna and other Hindu deities. The performances were presented with modern lighting, amplified sound systems and concert-style stage arrangements.
Bhajan Clubbing is a relatively recent cultural trend that combines traditional bhajans, kirtans and devotional chants with the atmosphere and presentation style of contemporary live music concerts. While retaining the devotional character of traditional music, such programmes often incorporate professional stage design, dynamic lighting, enhanced sound systems and modern musical arrangements.
The format has gradually evolved from smaller, youth-led devotional gatherings into organised public programmes in several major cities. Social media platforms have also contributed to the spread of the trend, enabling organisers and performers to reach wider audiences and promote such events beyond their local communities.
The growing popularity of Bhajan Clubbing has been particularly noticeable among younger audiences, including members of Gen Z. Organisers have increasingly combined traditional devotional performances with contemporary production techniques in an effort to create an environment that is both spiritually oriented and accessible to younger generations.
Prime Minister Modi had earlier spoken positively about the trend, describing it as a meeting point between spirituality and modernity. His participation in Friday’s Delhi programme brought additional national attention to a cultural format that seeks to connect traditional devotional practices with contemporary forms of musical presentation.
The event also coincided with commemorations marking the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to Upadhyaya and highlighted his philosophy of ‘Antyodaya’, which emphasises the upliftment and welfare of the most disadvantaged sections of society.
Prime Minister Modi said that Upadhyaya’s ideas continue to serve as a source of inspiration for public welfare and nation-building. The tribute formed part of the wider observance of the 110th birth anniversary of the Jana Sangh leader.
The Bhajan Clubbing programme in Delhi therefore combined two distinct elements of the day’s observances: a tribute to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and a contemporary cultural programme centred on devotional music. The participation of the Prime Minister highlighted the increasing public visibility of a format that brings together faith, traditional music, modern concert-style production and youth engagement.
