Today is World Population Day. The day is observed on the 11th of July every year to focus on the challenges and opportunities caused by the rising population. It is a reminder to address population-related concerns and work towards a sustainable future. By a resolution in December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly decided to continue observing World Population Day to enhance awareness of population issues, including their relations to the environment and development. The Day was first marked on 11th July 1990 in more than 90 countries. This year, the theme is- Healthy Timing and Spacing of Pregnancy for the Health and Well-being of Mother and Child. The theme highlights the importance of planned parenthood for a healthy outcome for maternal and child health.

On the occasion of World Population Day, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, in a social media post, said that the day serves as a platform to raise awareness about family planning and renew India’s commitment to addressing population-related challenges. The Minister added that the Government is delivering essential family planning services across the nation, empowering families and paving the way for a healthier India, through public health facilities including Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.

The slogan for this year is – “माँ बनने की उम्र वही, जब तन और मन की तैयारी सही” – emphasises the importance of informed and empowered decisions for parenthood with physical and emotional preparedness.
