The Day was first marked on 11th July 1990 in more than 90 countries. This year, the theme is- Healthy Timing and Spacing of Pregnancy for the Health and Well-being of Mother and Child. The theme highlights the importance of planned parenthood for a healthy outcome for maternal and child health.

On the occasion of World Population Day, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, in a social media post, said that the day serves as a platform to raise awareness about family planning and renew India’s commitment to addressing population-related challenges. The Minister added that the Government is delivering essential family planning services across the nation, empowering families and paving the way for a healthier India, through public health facilities including Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.
