There is an ominous spurt of rape incidents in Tripura as one more rape incident was reported from Kailasahar on Thursday while the Kumarghat and Kalyanpur gang rapes had already become a political issue with the opposition launching state wide protests.
According to reports a minor girl from Kailashahar was kidnapped and raped on October 25. The victim returned to her home on the next day and narrated her plight to her parents. Later, the victim’s family members lodged a complaint with Irani PS against one Aahid Ali. Based on the complaint, Police swung into action and nabbed Ali. During interrogation, Ali confessed his crime, OC of Irani PS Jahangir Hussain told the media.
In the meantime protests by opposition parties hit the streets across the state over the Kalyanpur gang rape incident even as the police arrested the prime accused of the incident Aditya Das, a BJP worker. BJP’s elected member of West Dwarikapur Panchayat Aditya Das was one among the four FIR named accused and police picked him from Baraighota forest on Thursday morning. With him two were arrested—the other being Tapas Debnath. Two others Ratan Debnath, and Bidhan Dutta are still absconding , but police said they would also soon be arrested.
Teliamura SDPO Prasun Kanti Tripura said Das will be sent to court tomorrow seeking police remand. Police also sought remand for Debnath when produced before the Khowai district Court.
Meantime, Congress, CPM and Trinamool Congress staged protest march and gave deputations to the Kalyanpur police demanding immediate arrest of all the accused.
A police press release said, raids are being continued to arrest the remaining accused persons.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim girl was taken to a abandoned house at Khas Kalyanpur by the FIR named accused persons while she was going to Khas Kalyanpur along with her friends. Subsequently, the girl was gang raped,” the press release issued by the Police Headquarters said.
It also stated, Tripura Police is giving highest priority to preventing crime against women in the state. Further investigation is going on.
Meanwhile, first the Kumarghat gang-rape and now the Kalyanpur gang-rape threw a tough challenge to both the state government as well as the ruling BJP as the opposition parties intensified their protests blaming the government for crime against women.
