Odisha CM orders strict action in Balasore student’s death

Must Read

Chief Minister of Odisha Mohan Charan Majhi has assured strict action against those responsible for the death of a 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, who attempted self-immolation over alleged sexual harassment by a faculty member and later succumbed to burn injuries at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar late last night. He also announced 20 lakh rupees ex-gratia to the family of the deceased girl. President Droupadi Murmu met the parents of the girl student yesterday evening at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar and expressed deep concern over the incident.

Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today came down heavily on the BJP government in Odisha over the death of the girl student. In his social media post, Mr Gandhi said the death of a daughter fighting for justice in Odisha is nothing less than a murder by the system. BJD President and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also described the incident as ‘shocking and deeply distressing’.

Meanwhile, the Odisha Congress has called for a statewide bandh on this Thursday, demanding justice for the deceased girl student and the safety of women in the state. Eight parties, including Left parties and the Nationalist Congress Party, have extended support to the bandh call of the Congress party. The police have so far arrested two persons, a faculty member and the principal of the college, who have also been suspended by the Odisha government in connection with the incident.
