No Trump-Kim Meeting Expected at Upcoming APEC Summit, Says South Korean Ambassador

Must Read

South Korea’s ambassador to the United States, Kang Kyung-wha, has said there is no indication that US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will meet during the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Korea later this month.

Speaking during a parliamentary audit at the South Korean mission to the U.N. in New York, Kang said that while both Trump and Kim have expressed openness to dialogue, no concrete plans for a meeting have emerged. Kim has previously signaled willingness to resume talks if the U.S. drops its demand for North Korea’s denuclearisation. She added that the U.S. has maintained its willingness to resume talks without preconditions.

Reaffirming Seoul’s commitment to peace on the Korean Peninsula, Kang said South Korea will continue working closely with Washington, despite North Korea’s ongoing missile development and refusal to engage in dialogue.
