No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights

International Day of Sign Languages is being celebrated today. Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr Virendra Kumar, will attend a program organised by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre in New Delhi. During the program, Dr Kumar will also launch several key initiatives, which will create new avenues for education, skill development, employment, and empowerment of the deaf community.
 
The Minister will also felicitate the winners of the 8th National Indian Sign Language Competition. The United Nations General Assembly declared 23rd September as the International Day of Sign Languages to raise awareness about the importance of sign language in realising the human rights of people who are Deaf. This year’s theme, No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights, emphasises the crucial role of sign language in ensuring equality, inclusion, and dignity for persons who are deaf.
