The ambush on the BSF border patrol in North Tripura inj which one border guard personnel Havildar Girjesh KUmar Uddey, a resident of Madhya Pradesh was killed was carried out by a group of NLFT militants led by Bikrambahadur Jamatia a ka Bamthung.
Sources said the NLFT Band which waylaid the BSF jawans were on the prowl for some days , especially after their four comrades in arms were forced to ‘surrender’ before the police. Only recently four NLFT militants-ywo of them hardcore and two oveground workers , surrendered before the police with one AK 47 and one Pistol. This was a serious jolt to the NLFT which was already suffering from manpower and weapons shortage. The group that surrendered before the authorities had been sent to the area for extortion. The NLFT was expecting a good amount of money from extortion and their ‘subscription’ collections. But as it happened the police got the whip of their presence and encircled them quite effectively. They were then forced to surrender.
Since then the Bikram Bahadur and his compatriots became desperate to avenge . Their initial plan was to carry out some sort of offensives on the Independence Day but due to adequate security arrangements and vigil by the police who had already been tipped off they failed to do anything and sneaked out to Bangladesh territory. But the left two or three persons for carrying out recce of the BSF border patrol and also to identify the suitable location for ambush. It was based on the information that the Friday ambush was carried out by the NLFT, and that too from Bangladesh territory that helped them to escape from the scene soon after with impunity.
“What, however, surprised us that the BSF was time and again alerted by us about the presence of the NLFT militants and they were planning to do some sort of attack. But apparently the information sent to them were not taken seriously and the Friday ambush did happen”, said a senior officer to Tripuranet.com.
