Tripura  government  brings into force new jail code replacing the the British era Bengal Jail Code. The council of ministers on Tuesday  repealed the Bengal Jail code of British Raj and approved the new manual for managing the Correctional Homes.

The age old Jail code that followed the Bengal Jail Code of the British time was found seriously unsuitable in the present time with new challenges in in maintaining the prisons . The new challengesthat the prison management face are found to be much more complicated and complex and the prevelant jail code could not meet them effectively . Whie there were issues relating to detention and release of the foreign nationals there were also several matters regarding human rights issues too.

Sources said, the first step to have a new Correctional Manual was taken by the Left Front government when Manindra Reang was the Jail Minister. The task was entrusted on eminentjudicial officer Dr Bubhash Kilikdar , a retired judge who had authored various scholarly books on Customery laws and and compendium. Dr Kilikdar worked tirelessly, consulted several other jail codes of various other states and also of the MHA’s guidelines  and with indepth research keeping in mind Tripura’s own unique socio-economic, ethnic and other considerationsin mind made the new Manual. It had been completed three years ago but for some bureaucratic red tapisim got stuck in the files. However, recently the government dusted it out and decided to get it into force.
