Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s recent remarks highlighting India as a key strategic partner have drawn significant attention, with a report suggesting that the comments reflect a broader structural shift in Israel’s foreign policy and signal expanding defence cooperation between the two countries.
According to a report published by the Jerusalem Times, Netanyahu’s statement came at a time when Israel’s relationship with the United States has reportedly experienced increasing strain. During a recent interview, Netanyahu remarked, “You have to build new alliances and develop new relationships. That’s what I’m doing right now with India,” indicating the growing importance of New Delhi in Israel’s strategic calculations.
The report noted that the remarks were made against the backdrop of reports describing a difficult exchange between Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump. According to the publication, Trump reportedly expressed frustration with the Israeli leadership, while US Vice-President JD Vance publicly described the United States as Israel’s only genuine ally.
In response, Netanyahu reportedly pointed to India’s growing partnership with Israel, stating that the country has “other friends, like India.” The report argues that this was not merely a diplomatic courtesy but a deliberate strategic response intended to demonstrate that Israel has diversified its international partnerships beyond its traditional dependence on Washington.

According to the report, Rafael Advanced Defence Systems is currently negotiating with Indian private-sector manufacturers to establish production facilities for Iron Dome’s Tamir interceptor missiles in India. If realised, the initiative would represent one of the most significant defence manufacturing collaborations between the two nations, enabling local production of critical missile interceptors that are central to Israel’s air defence system.
The report further argues that India offers several strategic advantages unmatched by many other partners. With its vast industrial base, skilled workforce, and expanding defence manufacturing capabilities, India possesses the production capacity necessary to support large-scale defence projects.
Additionally, India’s independent foreign policy enables it to maintain strong diplomatic relations with multiple global powers simultaneously, including the United States, Russia, Gulf nations, and Iran.
