NCERT experts praised the implementation of NIPUN Tripura initiatives during a three-day FLN field study, highlighting NIPUN Corners, handmade teaching-learning materials, Jaadui Pitara and activity-based learning practices that are creating engaging, child-friendly classrooms across schools in Tripura.
A team of experts from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has appreciated the implementation of various foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) initiatives under the NIPUN Tripura Mission during a three-day field study conducted across schools in the state.
The NCERT team carried out the field study from September 9 to 11 as part of its broader study titled “A Study of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) Initiatives in India.” Ten schools were selected for the study, with five schools each from Gomati and West Tripura districts.
During their visits, the NCERT representatives observed the overall learning environment and reviewed the implementation of different FLN-related activities in classrooms. The team examined the functioning of NIPUN Corners, activity-based learning practices, teacher-made teaching-learning materials (TLMs) and the use of “Jaadui Pitara” or Magic Box as part of classroom activities.
The NCERT experts also interacted with students, teachers and parents to understand how the NIPUN Tripura initiatives were being implemented at the grassroots level. The interactions helped the team assess the experiences of children and teachers and gain insights into the impact of FLN activities on classroom learning.
The use of locally developed and handmade teaching-learning materials by teachers particularly drew the attention of the NCERT team. The representatives appreciated teachers’ efforts to develop learning materials according to the requirements of their students and classroom situations.
The team also appreciated the use of activity-based and joyful learning methods, which encourage children to participate actively in classroom activities. According to the observations made during the field visits, such approaches are helping teachers understand and assess the learning levels of students more effectively.
The NCERT team noted that its experience of observing FLN initiatives across different states showed that the implementation of NIPUN initiatives in Tripura was appreciable. The team identified handmade TLMs, NIPUN Corners, Jaadui Pitara and activity-based classroom practices as important features of the initiatives observed during the field study.
The representatives further observed that these practices were contributing to a more engaging and child-friendly learning environment in schools. The initiatives were also enabling teachers to plan and design classroom activities based on the learning needs and participation levels of individual students.
As part of the study, a consultative meeting titled “A Study of FLN Initiatives in India & Initiatives by Tripura” was organised at Shiksha Bhawan in Agartala. The meeting was jointly organised by the Department of Elementary Education, NCERT, New Delhi, and the Directorate of Elementary Education, Tripura.
The meeting was attended by Joint Director of Elementary Education Harshita Biswas, Joint Director of Samagra Shiksha Rimi Debbarma, Deputy Director Sagar Debbarma, OSD Abhijit Samajpati, OSD Kali Prasad Chakma, OSD Partha Pratim Acharya and OSD Debasish Paul. Principals, representatives of DIETs and ATFs, BRPs, CRPs, headmasters and teachers from various schools also participated in the consultation.
The NCERT delegation comprised Prof Dr Padma Yadav, Dr Sandeep Kumar, Dr Pooja Patil, Dr Pranjali Dev and Shweta Sachdeva from the Department of Elementary Education.

The NIPUN Tripura Mission is aimed at strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy skills among children through improved classroom practices and child-focused learning approaches. The positive feedback from the NCERT team is expected to provide further impetus to the implementation of FLN initiatives and strengthen efforts to improve foundational learning outcomes among students across Tripura.
