Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman highlighted the timeless relevance of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s ideals of humanity, equality and communal harmony during a commemorative programme in Sonamura, urging society to preserve literary and cultural values amid rapid technological advancement and changing social trends.

A strong message on humanity, equality and cultural consciousness echoed through Sonamura Town Hall on Tuesday as Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman stressed the continuing relevance of rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s ideals in modern society. Addressing a commemorative programme organised to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary poet, the minister said Nazrul’s writings continue to inspire generations with messages of communal harmony, justice and resistance against oppression.

The event was organised jointly by the School Education Department and the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, drawing participation from government officials, cultural personalities, social workers and local residents. The programme paid tribute to one of the subcontinent’s most celebrated literary figures whose works remain influential across generations.

Speaking at the gathering, Barman described Kazi Nazrul Islam as far more than a poet. He said Nazrul was a philosopher, novelist, dramatist and freedom fighter whose contributions played a major role in awakening social consciousness during India’s independence movement. According to the minister, the poet’s fearless voice against injustice and inequality continues to hold immense significance in the present era.

Calling Nazrul a “voice of awakening and revolution,” Barman said the literary icon consistently stood against oppression while advocating peace, brotherhood and love among communities. He noted that the poet’s writings carried a universal appeal rooted in humanity and moral courage, making them deeply relevant even today.

The minister also expressed concern over the declining engagement of younger generations with literature and cultural activities amid the growing dominance of technology and digital lifestyles. He said excessive dependence on technology without cultural and literary awareness could weaken moral and social values in society.

“Education without cultural and literary values cannot build a humane society. Literature broadens the mind and strengthens moral consciousness,” Barman said while urging educational institutions to encourage literary and cultural participation alongside academic and technological advancement.

Highlighting the importance of preserving India’s rich cultural heritage, the minister stated that cultural traditions form the foundation of national identity. He called for wider promotion of literary and cultural programmes in schools and colleges across the state so that younger generations remain connected with the country’s intellectual and artistic legacy.

The commemorative programme concluded with vibrant cultural performances presented by artists from various organisations of the sub-division. Songs, recitations and cultural presentations celebrating Nazrul’s literary brilliance added colour and enthusiasm to the occasion, reflecting the enduring influence of the rebel poet’s ideals on society and culture.
