Agartala, Nov 16: National Press Day was observed in the State along with the entire country on Wednesday. The State-level programme was organized in Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala today.

The programme was organized with the joint initiative of the Agartala Press Club and the ICA department. The theme of the Press Day was the ‘Role of media in nation building’.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha in presence of ICA Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Secretary of the ICA department PK Chakraborty, Director of the department Ratan Biswas, secretary of Agartala Press club Pranab Sarkar, vice president of the press club Arun Nath and eminent veteran journalists – Shekhar Datta and Swapan Kumar Bhattacharjee.

In today’s programme, two eminent journalists of the State – Shekhar Datta and Swapan Kumar Bhattacharjee – were felicitated by the ICA for their contributions to media. Besides, accreditation cards for ‘distinguished journalist’ were given to journalists of 65+ years old and accreditation cards in the ‘veteran’ category were handed over to journalists of 25 years in media.

Shrataranjan Khisa, Arun Nath, Sanjib Deb, Shekhar Datta, Pradip Datta Bhowmik, Jayanta Bhattacharjee and Paritosh Biswas received the ‘distinguished journalist’ accreditation cards while Manas Pal and Pranab Sarkar got ‘veteran journalist’ accreditation cards. The Chief Minister and other distinguished guests handed over the cards.

In his inaugural speech, Dr Saha said, the media is the mirror of society and it has a crucial role in taking the country forward. He thanked the journalists and paid respect to deceased journalists.

He stressed publishing news items which would have a positive impact on society.

“Some of the media persons publish personal opinions while writing a news report. If this trend continues, it would be hard to reach the target of building ‘Ek Tripura, Shrestha Tripura’ in near future”, the Chief Minister said and reiterated the incumbent government is a media-friendly government.

In today’s programme, Sushanta Chowdhury, Pranab Sarkar and Arun Nath also delivered speeches and congratulated the media persons and others associated with the media houses. PK Chakraborty delivered the Welcome address.
