National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology becomes Deemed to Be University
The National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), an autonomous scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has been granted the status of “Deemed to Be University” under a distinct category by the Ministry of Education. This transformative initiative aims to revolutionize higher education in digital technologies, a press statement said
With its main campus located in Ropar, Punjab, and 11 constituent units across India—including Aizawl, Agartala, Aurangabad, Calicut, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Itanagar, Kekri, Kohima, Patna, and Srinagar—the university was formally dedicated to the nation during an event in Guwahati.
Cutting-Edge Courses to Meet Industry Demands
The newly established NIELIT Deemed to Be University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Blockchain Technology, Industry 4.0, Semiconductor Design & Manufacturing, Drone Technology, Cybersecurity, and Bioinformatics. The curriculum, developed in collaboration with industry leaders, ensures that students acquire job-ready skills aligned with market demands.
Focus on Inclusivity and Modernization
Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the university emphasizes accessibility, flexibility, and relevance. Leveraging a robust digital ecosystem, it provides virtual labs, AI-driven personalized learning, and immersive content, targeting Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, rural areas, and the Northeastern states to bridge the digital divide.
Ambitious Vision for Digital Skilling
NIELIT Deemed to Be University has set an ambitious target to skill over 3.7 million students in emerging technologies over the next five years. This aligns with the government’s vision to make India a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and Industry 4.0.
Inauguration Ceremony and Strategic MoUs
The inauguration, held at Kamakhya Devi in Guwahati, saw the presence of notable dignitaries, including Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Assam; Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology; and Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between NIELIT and Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) to enhance the semiconductor skilling ecosystem in India. This partnership focuses on establishing skill centers, developing certification programs, and conducting workshops in Semiconductor ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) technologies.
Leadership Remarks
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the government’s commitment to preparing a skilled workforce in cutting-edge fields like quantum computing and semiconductor manufacturing. He announced the development of a new NIELIT campus in Jagiroad near Guwahati, focusing on electronics and semiconductor manufacturing.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized Assam’s potential in the semiconductor industry, envisioning a future where chips “Made in India” and “Made in Assam” drive global innovation.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya called the launch a historic moment, underscoring the university’s role in providing higher education in advanced digital technologies.
The establishment of NIELIT Deemed to Be University marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards becoming a global leader in technology and innovation, fostering local talent and creating new opportunities across the nation.
