The Bishalgarh Central Jail was engulfed in controversy on Tuesday following the mysterious death of an under-trial inmate, Babul Das. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many questions unanswered.
Babul Das, a resident of Nandi Tilla under A.D. Nagar police station, had been incarcerated since July 14 on charges of spousal homicide. His sudden demise raised suspicions among family members and relatives, who gathered at the Bishalgarh sub-divisional hospital when news of his death broke.
According to reports, Das was rushed to the Bishalgarh sub-divisional hospital around 1 pm on Tuesday after experiencing a medical emergency. The attending medical officer, however, declared him ‘brought dead.’ Notably, the doctor noted an injury mark on the deceased’s head, adding to the intrigue surrounding his demise.
The jail authorities offered an explanation for the tragic incident, asserting that Babul Das had sustained a head injury after falling down a flight of stairs within the jail premises.
However, the family members and relatives of the deceased were not convinced by this explanation. They raised concerns about the circumstances of Das’s death and questioned the role of the jail authority in ensuring his safety.
Complicating matters further, there was a delay in conducting the post-mortem examination due to the unavailability of a forensic expert at the hospital until late in the evening. Eventually, the Bishalgarh sub-divisional administration intervened, issuing instructions for the autopsy to be carried out at GBP hospital.
As the investigation into Babul Das’s untimely demise unfolds, it leaves a community in mourning and searching for answers, with suspicions of foul play lingering in the air. The authorities are under mounting pressure to provide transparency and clarity in this perplexing case.
