Myanmar’s military ruler has named himself prime minister and announced to extend the state of emergency for two years. The military government named itself the caretaker government and Gen. Min Aung Hlaing the prime minister. Min Aung Hlaing repeated a pledge to restore democracy and hold elections, saying, they will accomplish the provisions of the state of emergency by August 2023.

He said his administration will work with any special envoy named by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). ASEAN foreign ministers are to meet today, when diplomats say they aim to finalise a special envoy tasked with ending violence and promoting dialogue between the military government and its opponents.

The state of emergency was declared when troops moved against the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi on 1st February, this year. The country has been gripped by protests for several months afterward.
