Murder Most Foul : Youth’s Decomposed Body Found in Shop Freezer, Six Arrested
In a horrific murder that has sent shock waves across Tripura, the decomposed body of a 24-year-old youth missing from Indranagar in Agartala was recovered from a deep freezer inside a shop at Narayanpur in Dhalai district’s Gandacherra on Wednesday.

The deceased, Shariful Islam, an electrician employed under the Smart City project, had been missing for the past four days. His family, suspecting foul play, had earlier alleged that he had been abducted and had submitted an FIR to the local police station.
The case took a grim turn when locals in Indranagar detained a suspect, Dr. Dibakar Saha, on Monday. Dibakar, who reportedly contacted Shariful on Sunday night under the pretext of offering him a gift, became a key person of interest in the investigation.
According to police sources, Dibakar—originally from Gandacherra but currently residing in Agartala—confessed during interrogation that led investigators to a small betel shop in Gandacherra. The shop, owned by his father, Dipak Saha, a local schoolteacher, became the site of a gruesome discovery. Shariful’s body, stuffed inside a trolley bag and concealed in a deep freezer, was found with his hands tied. Evidently it was a murder most gruesome.
A police team, accompanied by forensic experts, carried out a preliminary investigation at the scene before the body was sent to Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Hospital for autopsy.
Initial investigations revealed a possible motive rooted in a complicated love triangle. Shariful was reportedly in a relationship with Dibakar’s cousin from Chandrapur for over a year and a half. However, the girl’s family opposed the relationship due to religious differences. Further complicating the matter, Dibakar himself had allegedly developed romantic feelings for the same cousin.
The discovery has sparked widespread outrage and alarm in the Gandacherra area, with local residents expressing shock over the brutality of the crime.
West Tripura District Superintendent of Police Dr. Kiran Kumar K, addressing the media, confirmed that six individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder. The arrested include:
-
Dr. Dibakar Saha (28) – the main accused
-
Dipak Saha (52) – Dibakar’s father and owner of the shop
-
Debika Saha (48) – Dibakar’s mother
-
Animesh Yadav (24)
-
Joydip Das (28)
-
Nabanita Das (25)
The police have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests as the investigation progresses. The case is now being treated as a premeditated murder, possibly involving a conspiracy, with love, rejection, and familial opposition emerging as key factors behind the gruesome act.
Further forensic analysis and interrogation of the arrested individuals are expected to shed more light on the sequence of events that led to this brutal killing.
