West Tripura MP and former CM Biplab Deb accused Communists of stalling Tripura’s progress and depriving youth of sports opportunities. Speaking at the inauguration of a football tournament in Kumarghat, Deb emphasized youth empowerment, sports development, and criticized the CPI (M) for prioritizing politics over growth during its long rule.
West Tripura MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Sunday strongly criticized the Communist Party of India (Marxist), accusing it of neglecting the youth of Tripura and obstructing the state’s development during their decades-long rule.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a football tournament organized by the Kumarghat Play Centre, Deb alleged that the Communists, rather than nurturing young talent and promoting sports, used youth for political purposes.
“Communists have always been against development. Instead of creating a healthy environment for sports and encouraging youth, their main objective was to mislead them and lengthen the rows in political rallies,” Deb said while addressing the gathering.
The BJP leader, known for his strong criticisms of the CPI (M), described the Left regime as a “permanent emergency” for Tripura, adding that it was a party devoid of culture and vision for growth. According to him, the CPI (M)’s policies deprived Tripura’s younger generation of opportunities in sports and education, keeping them away from constructive pursuits.
Sports as a Medium of Progress
Deb underlined the importance of sports in shaping disciplined, skilled, and confident youth. He said that under BJP-led governance, initiatives have been undertaken to promote sports infrastructure, identify young talents, and give them platforms to showcase their abilities.
“In a developing society, sports is not just recreation. It builds character, fosters unity, and instills confidence among the younger generation. That is why we are committed to ensuring opportunities for our youth, so they can achieve success in sports at state, national, and even international levels,” Deb remarked.
He further emphasized that the BJP’s vision for Tripura is centered on empowerment and inclusivity, ensuring that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.
Football Tournament Brings Community Together
The football tournament at Kumarghat’s PWD ground was organized with the initiative of MLA Bhagaban Das and saw the participation of 16 teams from across the district. The event drew large crowds, particularly youth, highlighting the growing enthusiasm for sports in the region.
Deb inaugurated the tournament in the presence of MP Rajib Bhattacharjee and Unakoti District Magistrate Tamal Majumder. The inaugural ceremony witnessed vibrant energy, with young players and spectators alike celebrating the start of the competition.
Addressing the gathering, Deb praised the efforts of local organizers and expressed hope that such tournaments would continue to inspire young athletes in Tripura. He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving sports facilities in rural and semi-urban areas, ensuring equal opportunities for all talented players.
A Call for Youth Empowerment
The former Chief Minister also urged young people to stay away from divisive politics and focus on constructive activities like education, sports, and skill development. He stressed that a strong and empowered youth population is vital for Tripura’s future.
“Youth must not fall prey to divisive propaganda. They should channel their energy into building careers, excelling in sports, and serving society positively. The government stands with them, and opportunities will continue to grow if they move in the right direction,” Deb said.
The event, beyond being a sporting occasion, became a political stage where Deb sought to contrast the BJP’s vision of progress with the alleged misrule of the Communists. His speech was met with applause from the gathering, many of whom expressed support for his call to encourage youth participation in sports and development activities.

The inauguration of the football tournament at Kumarghat showcased not only the rising popularity of sports in Tripura but also highlighted the political debates that continue to shape the state’s narrative. While the football ground echoed with cheers of enthusiastic players and spectators, Biplab Kumar Deb’s sharp words against the Communists reminded everyone of the ideological battles still central to Tripura’s politics.
With 16 teams vying for the trophy and a spirited crowd supporting them, the event marked a step forward in promoting community bonding and youth engagement through sports. For Deb, however, it was also an opportunity to remind people that in his view, true progress comes only when politics serves development and youth empowerment rather than narrow agendas.
