Tripura Minister Tinku Roy inaugurates Sakhi One Stop Centre, urging united action against domestic violence and child marriage while highlighting women empowerment initiatives, shelter support, legal aid, and government schemes for safety and independence.

In a strong push toward safeguarding women and children, Tinku Roy, Minister for Social Welfare and Social Education, has urged collective societal action to eliminate domestic violence and child marriage. The minister made these remarks while inaugurating a new Sakhi One Stop Centre at the Tripura Women’s Commission office in West Tripura district.

Highlighting the urgency of addressing gender-based violence, Roy emphasized that laws alone cannot eradicate such deep-rooted social issues. “Society must come together to protect vulnerable groups and ensure justice,” he stated, stressing the importance of awareness, education, and community responsibility.

The newly inaugurated Sakhi One Stop Centre is designed to provide immediate relief and comprehensive support to distressed, exploited, and abused women. According to the minister, beneficiaries will be able to stay at the centre free of cost for up to five days. Beyond this emergency period, arrangements will be made for extended shelter, food, and rehabilitation at Shakti Sadan facilities for up to three years.

The centre will also offer free counseling services, psychological support, and access to legal aid, ensuring that victims receive holistic care under one roof. Officials noted that such centres play a crucial role in helping survivors rebuild their lives with dignity and independence.

Roy further informed that eight Sakhi One Stop Centres are already operational across the state, with another recently opened in Kumarghat. These centres form a key part of the government’s strategy to strengthen support systems for women facing violence and exploitation.

In addition to crisis intervention, the Tripura government has been expanding its infrastructure for women’s welfare. The minister revealed that 10 new working women’s hostels are currently under construction, with a total investment exceeding Rs 100 crore. Each hostel will have the capacity to accommodate around 100 women, offering free lodging and meals to promote safety and economic independence.

Emphasizing long-term empowerment, Roy highlighted several progressive measures introduced by the government. These include 50 percent reservation for women in local bodies and market sheds, 30 percent reservation in government jobs, and financial assistance worth Rs 2,100 crore extended to women’s self-help groups under various livelihood schemes.

“A healthy, educated, and self-reliant mother ensures a self-reliant family and society,” Roy remarked, underlining the importance of women’s empowerment in nation-building. He also called for intensified efforts to raise awareness and strengthen social accountability to end child marriage and gender injustice.
