Meghalaya launches the Health Advancement Policy, offering ₹2 crore financial aid to five not-for-profit hospitals to upgrade infrastructure. CM Sangma inaugurated the scheme, emphasizing sustainable and equitable healthcare for underserved regions across the state.

In a significant move to improve the healthcare infrastructure of Meghalaya, the state government has launched the Meghalaya Health Advancement Policy. This landmark initiative was officially inaugurated on Monday by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting not-for-profit hospitals across the state.

As part of this policy, five non-profit hospitals will receive financial assistance of ₹2 crore each to upgrade and expand their medical facilities. The initiative aims to bolster healthcare services in underserved and remote areas by providing essential infrastructure and equipment.

At the launch event, Chief Minister Sangma handed over the first instalment of ₹1 crore each to Tura Christian Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital, Tura. These hospitals, which have long been recognized for their charitable work and dedication to community health, are among the first beneficiaries of the scheme.

“We will be supporting five not-for-profit hospitals across the state under this policy by providing financial aid to upgrade their infrastructure,” said the Chief Minister. He noted that the grants can be used for constructing additional facilities, acquiring modern medical equipment, and enhancing critical healthcare infrastructure.

The policy underscores the government’s appreciation for hospitals operated by missionary and charitable organizations. Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of healthcare workers, stating, “It is not just financial support; it is our sincere gesture of appreciation. Often, the tireless service of our healthcare workers, sisters, doctors, and hospital administrators goes unnoticed. Today, I want to personally thank each one of you for the difference you are making in our people’s lives.”

The second instalment of the grant will be released once the recipient hospitals submit utilisation certificates for the first tranche, ensuring accountability and transparency in the process.

Hospitals in Jowai and Shillong are also expected to benefit from the scheme in the coming phases. This initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to support institutions that have historically played a vital role in public health and social service.

Chief Minister Sangma reaffirmed the state’s dedication to advancing healthcare access, especially in regions where government healthcare facilities are limited. “The government is committed to supporting hospitals that have historically contributed to community service and health outreach, particularly in underserved regions,” he stated.

The Meghalaya Health Advancement Policy is a visionary step toward achieving equitable, quality healthcare in the state, marking a new chapter in public health support for charitable institutions.
