Daniil Medvedev defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-5 to reach the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals. The former champion delivered a strong serving performance, extended his head-to-head advantage and will next face American Tommy Paul in pursuit of another Masters 1000 title.

Daniil Medvedev continued his impressive run at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday, defeating longtime rival Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-5 to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

The Russian former champion produced a disciplined performance over 84 minutes, maintaining control throughout the contest and strengthening his hopes of winning another title in Shanghai. With the victory, Medvedev reached the quarterfinals of the tournament for the fourth time in his last five appearances.

Medvedev, who won the Shanghai Masters in 2019, improved his record against Tsitsipas to 11-5 in their Lexus ATP head-to-head series. His latest victory also highlighted his strong form in China, where he has continued to deliver consistent performances throughout the tournament.

Speaking during his on-court interview, Medvedev expressed his affection for Shanghai and satisfaction with his performance.

“I love Shanghai as a city. It is one of my favourite stops on Tour, so I’m trying to stay as long as possible,” he said, adding that he was playing well and had adapted successfully to a different style of play.

The Russian was particularly effective on serve, refusing to allow Tsitsipas a single break-point opportunity. His reliable serving kept the Greek player under pressure and prevented him from gaining momentum during crucial stages of the match.

Medvedev also made effective use of Tsitsipas’ backhand, targeting the weaker side of his opponent’s game while maintaining consistency from the baseline. The Russian committed only 10 unforced errors, compared with 18 by Tsitsipas, demonstrating his greater accuracy and control during the encounter.

The victory made Medvedev just the sixth man to reach the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals on at least four occasions, further strengthening his record at the prestigious Chinese tournament.

The 30-year-old is now targeting his fourth title of the year and his first ATP Masters 1000 crown since 2023. Having progressed without dropping a set in Shanghai, Medvedev will next face American Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals.

The upcoming encounter presents another important challenge for Medvedev as he seeks to continue his title campaign. Paul also advanced to the last eight after defeating Zizou Bergs, the player who had eliminated Carlos Alcaraz, with a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory.

Paul’s win marked a significant achievement, as the American completed his record of reaching the quarterfinals at all six ATP Masters 1000 hard-court tournaments. He will now look to build on that milestone by pursuing his maiden Masters 1000 title.

Beyond the immediate title race, Medvedev’s progress in Shanghai could prove crucial to his qualification hopes for the ATP Finals in Turin. He entered this stage of the tournament eighth in the ATP Live Race To Turin, putting himself in contention to qualify for the prestigious year-end championship for the seventh time.

Paul, meanwhile, was ranked 14th in the live standings and has an opportunity to improve his position significantly with a deep run in Shanghai.

With his strong serving, improved baseline consistency and growing confidence, Medvedev remains a serious contender for the Shanghai Masters title. His quarterfinal clash against Paul will be another key test as the tournament moves towards its decisive stages.
