Former Australian cricket legend Matthew Hayden has joined Glasgow Cosmic as co-owner and head coach ahead of the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL) 2026. Hayden’s appointment strengthens the franchise’s ambitions as Glasgow Cosmic prepares to compete alongside Europe’s top teams in the ICC-sanctioned tournament.

Former Australian cricket great Matthew Hayden has been appointed co-owner and head coach of Glasgow Cosmic, providing a major boost to the franchise ahead of the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL) scheduled for 2026. The announcement marks one of the most significant developments for the Glasgow-based franchise as it prepares to compete in Europe’s newest and most ambitious T20 cricket competition.

A World Cup-winning opener and one of the most accomplished batters in international cricket history, Hayden brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and cricketing knowledge to the organization. His arrival is expected to strengthen Glasgow Cosmic both on and off the field as the franchise aims to establish itself among Europe’s elite cricket teams.

Speaking about his decision to join the franchise, Hayden said the vision and long-term ambition of Glasgow Cosmic played a decisive role in attracting him to the project. He emphasized that successful teams are built on strong values, a clear purpose, and a commitment to excellence.

“What attracted me most was the vision behind the project. Great teams are built on strong values, clear purpose, and bold thinking. I look forward to helping build something special in Glasgow,” Hayden stated.

The former Australian star also stressed the importance of creating a winning culture within the team. According to Hayden, fostering an environment where players can thrive, handle pressure situations, and maximize their potential will be central to the club’s development strategy.

Hayden further described the European T20 Premier League as an exciting opportunity to expand the reach of cricket across emerging markets in Europe. He believes the tournament can play a vital role in inspiring young cricketers and accelerating the sport’s growth throughout the continent.

Glasgow Cosmic management welcomed Hayden’s appointment, highlighting his vast international experience and leadership credentials. Franchise officials expressed confidence that his presence will help shape the club’s future direction while enhancing its profile within the rapidly growing European cricket landscape.

The Glasgow Cosmic squad already boasts an impressive collection of international stars. The franchise roster includes explosive New Zealand batter Finn Allen, England all-rounder Liam Livingstone, Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe, former Australian captain Moises Henriques, Sri Lankan talent Kamindu Mendis, South African pacer Lungi Ngidi, Namibian captain Gerhard Erasmus, Keshav Maharaj, Duan Jansen, and Ali Khan.

The team also features Scotland captain Richie Berrington and Scottish cricket star George Munsey, underlining the franchise’s commitment to nurturing local talent while maintaining a strong international presence. Their inclusion reflects Glasgow Cosmic’s intention to contribute to the continued growth and development of Scottish cricket.

The European T20 Premier League received official sanction from the International Cricket Council (ICC) on November 27 last year. The six-team competition represents a landmark collaboration between the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, aiming to elevate European cricket to new heights on the global stage.

The inaugural ETPL season is scheduled to run from August 26 to September 20, featuring 33 matches among six franchises representing Glasgow, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Belfast, Rotterdam, and Dublin. Earlier this month, the league completed its franchise lineup during a landmark event in Dublin, where former India head coach Rahul Dravid was unveiled as the owner of the Dublin franchise.
