Manoj Bajpayee’s ‘Governor’ trailer revisits India’s 1990 economic crisis, portraying the nation’s financial collapse and the reforms that changed its future. The political drama inspired by true events explores leadership, public outrage, and economic survival ahead of its June 2026 release.

The trailer of the upcoming political drama Governor, starring acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee, was officially unveiled on Tuesday, offering audiences a gripping look into one of the most difficult chapters in India’s economic history. Set against the backdrop of the nation’s financial crisis in the early 1990s, the film explores the tense atmosphere that surrounded the country when it was reportedly standing on the verge of bankruptcy.

The trailer presents a dramatic portrayal of economic uncertainty, rising public anger, and mounting political pressure as India struggled with rapidly declining foreign exchange reserves. Through emotionally charged scenes and intense dialogues, the film captures the fear and instability that affected the nation during that period. The narrative builds constant tension around the collapsing economy while showcasing the urgent decisions that had to be made to prevent a complete financial disaster.

In the film, Manoj Bajpayee appears in the role of a Reserve Bank Governor, a character believed to be inspired by former RBI Governor S. Venkitaramanan. He served during the historic 1991 economic crisis and played a significant role during India’s financial rescue efforts. However, the filmmakers have not officially confirmed whether the story is directly based on his life or specific events connected to him.

The trailer also highlights the social and political unrest that emerged during the crisis period. Public frustration over inflation, economic uncertainty, and the lack of financial stability forms a major part of the film’s atmosphere. The makers appear to have focused on presenting the emotional and administrative pressure faced by policymakers while attempting to stabilise the country’s economy.

India’s economic reforms during the 1990s are considered a turning point in the nation’s development. At the time, the country faced severe financial difficulties as both foreign currency reserves and gold reserves were depleting rapidly. To overcome the crisis, India introduced liberalisation policies that opened the economy to global markets and foreign investment. These reforms eventually transformed the nation’s economic structure and contributed to industrial growth, infrastructure expansion, and increasing Foreign Direct Investment.

The film aims to revisit that critical historical moment through a cinematic lens while examining the leadership and decisions that shaped modern India’s economic direction. The trailer suggests that Governor will blend political drama with real-world economic history, making it both a compelling thriller and an insightful period story.

Presented by Sunshine Pictures, the film is produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and directed by Chinmay Mandlekar. It is co-produced by Aashin A. Shah and written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah. The music has been composed by Amit Trivedi, while the lyrics are penned by legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar.
