In Manipur, the low lying dwelling areas in different districts have submerged in the water overflowing from the nearby rivers affecting normal life in the State. The state is experienced incessant rainfall in the last 48 hours due to severe cyclonic pressure developed in the Bay of Bengal due to Cyclone Remal.
Most of the rivers of Manipur including major rivers like Imphal River, Iril River, Barak Rivers are flowing above the danger mark. Breaching of river banks in different places have resulted in submerging of houses and other construction in Imphal area. The Government machineries and the general public have been trying to stop the water by repairing the river bank. Power cuts and poor mobile connectivity are also reported from various parts of the state. District Administrations have issued precautionary warnings to the general public and helpline numbers are also open for any assistance.
The heavy rainfall in the State since Monday has also created mudslides and landslides along the National Highway 37 (Imphal to Jiribam Road) thus affecting the transportation system. In Kangpokpi district, the Bailey Bridge connecting Kangpokpi Military Colony and Saikul has been damaged badly.
Meanwhile, the flash flood affected families are taking shelter in different camps opened both by Government and local organisations. In Senapati, the district administration has opened three camps for the affected families. Meanwhile, The Manipur Fire Service Department said that the department has rescued around seven hundred persons from the flood areas of Imphal-West district today.
The Governor of Manipur Sushri Anusuiya Uikey expressed deep concern and saddened by the damage to homes and properties in both the valley and hills districts of Manipur caused by the incessant rainfall due to cyclone Remal over the past 48 hours.
In a message, the Governor urged all citizens to remain calm and refrain from panicking in the current situation and assured that the State Government is committed to taking all necessary measures to prevent the situation from worsening and to extend all possible assistance to those affected.
