Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has reaffirmed Bruno Fernandes’ commitment to the club, insisting the Portuguese midfielder will continue as captain ahead of the Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Carrick dismissed suggestions that Fernandes could lose the captain’s armband after being left on the bench during Manchester United’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in their previous outing. Addressing reporters ahead of the Chelsea fixture, the manager made it clear that the midfielder’s leadership role was not under discussion.
“There’s no decision to be made on that,” Carrick said when asked whether Fernandes would remain captain.
“Bruno is fully committed to the football club; there are no issues with that. We look ahead to the game on Saturday,” he added.
Fernandes’ omission from the starting lineup against Bournemouth had raised questions about his position within the squad. The decision followed an emotional reaction after Manchester United’s UEFA Champions League defeat to Como, leading to speculation about the midfielder’s relationship with the club and his future responsibilities.
However, Carrick moved to dismiss those concerns, emphasising that the 31-year-old remained a central figure in the team’s plans. He also stressed that both the player and the club were focused on improving performances during a challenging period.
“Listen, we are clear on the situation of the team and as a football club at the moment. As I’ve just said, he is an important player for this group; he has been, and he will be,” Carrick said.
The Manchester United manager added that Fernandes was determined to help the club turn its fortunes around.
“Between us, we have got to make a difference; we have got to push things in a different direction. He is fully committed to this football club; he is fully committed to making things better,” he said.
Carrick also highlighted Fernandes’ experience and leadership qualities, pointing out that the midfielder had guided the team through numerous matches over the years. According to the manager, the recent developments would not change the player’s responsibilities as captain.
“It doesn’t change things, you know; he is the one who has led the team so well for many a game and for many a year, and he will continue to do that,” Carrick said.
The comments are intended to provide clarity ahead of a demanding away fixture against Chelsea, with Manchester United seeking a stronger performance following their heavy loss to Bournemouth.
Meanwhile, Carrick delivered encouraging news regarding midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has returned to training after missing Manchester United’s previous four matches because of an injury sustained during the Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
“Kobbie has done a little bit of training yesterday. So, he’s back and around the group, so that’s obviously positive,” Carrick said.
Mainoo had been unavailable for United’s Champions League fixtures against Atletico de Madrid and Como, as well as Premier League encounters against Leeds United and Bournemouth. Although Carrick did not confirm whether the midfielder would feature against Chelsea, his return to training raises the possibility of a place in the matchday squad.

Manchester United have continued preparations for Saturday’s match, with Carrick overseeing a training session at the club’s Carrington training facility on Wednesday. The team faces pressure to regain momentum and improve its league performance after a disappointing run of results.
The encounter at Stamford Bridge presents an important opportunity for United to respond positively, while Fernandes’ continued leadership and Mainoo’s potential return could provide encouragement as the club looks to strengthen its performances in the coming matches.
