Maharashtra declares ‘Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav’ as state festival; State Government to fund grand celebrations.
The Maharashtra government has officially declared ‘Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav’ as a state festival. The announcement was made in the Legislative Assembly yesterday by Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar. The minister also confirmed that the state government will bear the expenses for organising and promoting grand celebrations across Maharashtra.
Shelar noted that Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav was first initiated in 1893 by freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak. He emphasised that the festival embodies the values of social unity, nationalism, the spirit of freedom, self-respect, and pride in our language. Highlighting its cultural significance, Shelar stated, ‘Ganeshotsav is more than just a celebration – it represents Maharashtra’s cultural pride and identity.’
