India continued its stellar run at the Macau Open Badminton Tournament, with impressive performances propelling multiple players into the quarterfinals.
In men’s singles, Tharun Mannepalli pulled off a thrilling victory against Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu 19-21, 21-14, 22-20. Tharun will now face China’s world No. 87, Hu Zhe An, in the quarterfinals today.
Lakshya Sen also advanced to the last eight after a hard-fought 21-14, 14-21, 21-17 win over Indonesia’s Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo. He will meet China’s Zhu Xuan Chen in today’s quarterfinal.
In men’s doubles, India’s top-ranked pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Japan’s Kakeru Kumagai and Hiroki Nishi 10-21, 22-20, 21-16. They will now face the Malaysian duo of Choong Hon Jian and Muhammad Haikal in their quarterfinal clash today.
Although Ayush Shetty exited the tournament after a valiant effort against Malaysia’s Justin Hoh, India’s strong showing across events has raised hopes for more podium finishes as the tournament progresses.
