KKR stunned GT by 29 runs at Eden Gardens as Shubman Gill admitted costly dropped catches hurt GT badly. Finn Allen’s explosive 93 and Sunil Narine’s brilliance kept KKR’s IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive.

A high-scoring contest at Eden Gardens produced one of the most entertaining matches of IPL 2026 as Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Gujarat Titans by 29 runs on Saturday night. The victory not only halted Gujarat’s impressive five-match winning streak but also revived Kolkata’s playoff hopes in dramatic fashion.

The result pushed Kolkata Knight Riders to sixth place on the points table, placing them firmly back in contention for a top-four finish. Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, suffered a setback largely due to poor fielding and missed opportunities during a game where margins proved decisive.

Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill openly admitted that his team’s fielding errors cost them dearly. The Titans dropped multiple catches, including two crucial chances offered by explosive opener Finn Allen, who capitalized fully to produce a devastating innings of 93 runs.

Speaking after the match, Gill said the surface at Eden Gardens was ideal for batting and believed a total between 200 and 210 was a par score. However, he acknowledged that Gujarat’s sloppy fielding standards made victory impossible.

According to Gill, the team had set high standards throughout the tournament, but dropping three straightforward catches proved unacceptable at this stage of the competition. He also stressed that it was better for the team to learn such lessons before entering the knockout stages.

Kolkata’s batting unit delivered one of their finest performances of the season, posting a mammoth 247/2 in 20 overs. The innings was built around Allen’s aggressive stroke play and a mature unbeaten knock from young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who scored a career-best 82 not out.

Allen dominated Gujarat’s bowling attack from the beginning, attacking both pace and spin with complete authority. His fearless batting shifted momentum entirely in Kolkata’s favor and placed enormous pressure on Gujarat’s chase. Raghuvanshi, meanwhile, played the perfect supporting role before accelerating brilliantly in the latter stages of the innings.

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane praised the fearless intent shown by his batters against one of the strongest bowling attacks in the tournament. Rahane highlighted the preparation and mindset within the squad, emphasizing that the players focused on taking one game at a time despite the pressure surrounding their playoff ambitions.

Rahane also credited the contribution of all-rounder Cameron Green and appreciated the efforts of bowlers who stepped up under pressure. He singled out domestic performer Saurabh Dubey for special praise, noting that the coaching staff had identified his potential early.

The Kolkata captain further applauded veteran spinner Sunil Narine for once again delivering in a crucial match. Narine’s economical spell of 2/29 played a major role in restricting Gujarat Titans, who ultimately finished 29 runs short despite a strong batting lineup.

Rahane also revealed that mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy battled through discomfort due to a sore foot, praising his courage and commitment to the team cause.

Player of the Match Narine reflected on his landmark appearance and credited hard work and consistency for Kolkata’s recent resurgence. The veteran all-rounder said every game in the IPL presents unique challenges and stressed the importance of staying focused on specific match situations rather than overthinking.

Narine also expressed gratitude for maintaining fitness and form over a long career, adding that he hoped to continue contributing to Kolkata Knight Riders in the future.

Young batter Raghuvanshi described the innings as one of the most enjoyable moments of his career. He admitted that batting alongside Finn Allen made his role significantly easier, as the New Zealand star dominated the bowling from the other end.

The youngster also spoke about the intense training methods that shaped his development, revealing that his childhood coach Abhishek Nayar had encouraged him to face thousands of deliveries regularly in practice sessions.

With this victory, Kolkata Knight Riders have injected fresh energy into their IPL 2026 campaign. Their batting firepower, combined with experienced performers like Narine, could make them dangerous contenders in the closing stages of the tournament.

For Gujarat Titans, the defeat serves as a timely warning. Despite their strong form throughout the season, fielding lapses and missed opportunities can quickly change the outcome of matches in a competition as competitive as the IPL.
