Karthi’s ‘Sardar 2’, directed by P S Mithran, has received a U/A certificate from the CBFC and is set for worldwide release on September 10. The spy thriller explores health and hygiene concerns while continuing the story of the blockbuster original.
The much-awaited Tamil spy thriller ‘Sardar 2’, starring actor Karthi in the lead role, has officially received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with a U/A certificate, paving the way for its worldwide theatrical release on September 10.
Directed by P S Mithran, the sequel has generated considerable anticipation among Karthi’s fans and moviegoers since its announcement. Production house Prince Pictures, which is backing the project, confirmed the certification through its social media platforms with the message, “Stillness before the Storm. #Sardar2 certified with U/A.”
The film is the sequel to the 2022 blockbuster ‘Sardar’, which also featured Karthi in a dual role and was directed by Mithran. The first film earned widespread appreciation for combining espionage with a socially relevant storyline. The sequel is expected to continue that approach while focusing on another important issue connected to public health and hygiene.
Karthi had previously spoken about the film’s central theme during the audio and trailer launch. According to the actor, audiences who watch ‘Sardar 2’ may find it difficult to ignore the message the film seeks to convey about their health and well-being.
Referring to the issue highlighted in the movie, Karthi said that people who regularly consume water from plastic bottles might reconsider the practice after watching the film. He indicated that the subject deals with a troubling truth related to health and could leave audiences deeply shaken.
In the first instalment, Mithran explored the commercialisation of water and its wider consequences. The film went on to become a major commercial success. With ‘Sardar 2’, the filmmaker has shifted the focus towards issues concerning health and hygiene, while retaining the spy-thriller format that defined the original.
Karthi has also praised Mithran’s commitment to the project, describing the director’s efforts as sincere. The actor expressed his desire for the film to reach a wide audience and said that fans are prepared to embrace movies that combine entertainment with meaningful social themes.
The production of ‘Sardar 2’ has involved an extensive international schedule. The film unit completed its shooting in Bangkok in June 2025, following a lengthy production process. The team had also completed 100 days of shooting by April 2025.
Earlier, the makers had released a promotional video announcing the sequel, showing Karthi’s character being assigned a spy mission in Cambodia. Mithran later revealed that the story initially moves to Cambodia before shifting to China, indicating that the sequel will expand the geographical scale of the franchise.
Actress Malavika Mohanan is also part of the cast. She had earlier shared a glimpse from the Bangkok schedule and revealed during a fan interaction that she expected to complete her portions of the film in June 2025.
On the technical front, George Williams has handled cinematography, while Sam C S has composed the music. Vijay Velukutty is responsible for editing, with art direction handled by MSP Madhavan and B. Sekar.
