Justice Arindam Lodh emphasized the importance of human rights in healthcare during a seminar at ILS Hospitals Agartala. He highlighted patient dignity, informed consent, confidentiality, and equal access to quality healthcare as fundamental rights, urging medical institutions and professionals to uphold ethical standards and patient-centered care.
Emphasizing the inseparable connection between healthcare and human rights, Justice Arindam Lodh, Chairman of the Tripura Human Rights Commission, called upon healthcare institutions and professionals to adopt a patient-centric approach that prioritizes dignity, equality, and ethical responsibility in medical care.
Justice Lodh made these remarks while addressing a seminar titled “Human Rights in the Health Care Domain,” organized by ILS Hospitals Agartala on Tuesday. The event was held at the ILS Auditorium and witnessed participation from doctors, nursing personnel, healthcare professionals, and students from different parts of the state.
Delivering the keynote address as the chief guest, Justice Lodh stressed that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental human right and should be available to all individuals without discrimination. He stated that informed consent, confidentiality, respectful treatment, and equal access to healthcare services are not privileges but essential rights that every patient deserves.
“Healthcare must go beyond treatment and diagnosis. It should be rooted in respect for human dignity and ethical responsibility. Every patient has the right to be treated with compassion, fairness, and respect,” Justice Lodh said while addressing the gathering.
He further urged hospitals, healthcare workers, and policymakers to integrate human rights principles into everyday medical practice. According to him, ensuring transparency, accountability, and patient welfare is crucial for building trust between healthcare providers and the communities they serve.
The seminar also saw the presence of key representatives from ILS Hospitals Agartala, including Kishore Ambuly, Group Advisor; Dr. Gautam Hazarika, Chief Operating Officer (COO); and Dr. Subhrajyoti Bhowmik, Vice President – Clinical & Quality. They echoed the importance of maintaining high ethical standards in healthcare delivery and emphasized that patient welfare must remain the central focus of all medical institutions.
Speakers highlighted the growing need to educate healthcare professionals about their legal and ethical obligations while dealing with patients. Discussions during the seminar focused on strengthening awareness regarding patient rights, improving healthcare accountability, and promoting reforms that can safeguard human rights at every stage of healthcare delivery.
