In boxing, India has guaranteed itself at least three bronze medals at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, United Kingdom, after Jasmine Lamboria, Nupur Sheoran and Pooja Rani advanced to the semifinals, while two-time champion Nikhat Zareen bowed out in the quarterfinals.
Zareen’s bid for a third consecutive medal ended in the 51-kilogram division with a 5-0 loss to Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu, a two-time Olympic silver medalist. Rani, a 34-year-old veteran, moved into the semifinals of the 80-kilogram category by edging Poland’s Emilia Koterska in a scrappy 3-2 split decision. Rani had received a first-round bye.
Earlier, Sheoran booked her place in the semifinals of the heavyweight 80-plus kg division by defeating Oltinoy Sotimboeva of Uzbekistan. Lamboria also secured a medal by advancing to the last four in her weight class.
