In Jammu and Kashmir, beekeeping is emerging as a sustainable source of income and self-employment in Reasi district of Jammu division. Under centrally sponsored schemes, the government is providing subsidies of up to 80 percent for establishing beekeeping units, encouraging farmers and unemployed youth to adopt apiculture as an alternative livelihood option. According to the Apiculture Department, 31 beekeeping units have so far been established in the district under different government schemes. Officials said the initiative is generating employment opportunities, especially for rural youth and small farmers, while also supporting crop pollination and biodiversity. The department is providing technical guidance and training to beneficiaries to improve honey production and marketing. Beneficiaries, including women from remote villages, said the scheme has improved household incomes and encouraged self-reliance through commercial-scale beekeeping.
