Jahar Chakraborti was sworn in as Dharmanagar MLA after a record BJP by-election victory in Tripura. Chief Minister Manik Saha and senior leaders attended the ceremony, highlighting BJP’s growing legislative strength and renewed focus on Dharmanagar’s development and governance.
A new political chapter began in Tripura on Wednesday as newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jahar Chakraborti officially took oath as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Dharmanagar constituency. The oath-taking ceremony was held at the lobby of the Tripura Legislative Assembly in the presence of senior ministers, legislators, political leaders, and dignitaries from across the state.
Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia administered the oath to Chakraborti during the formal ceremony, which drew a large gathering from both the ruling and opposition benches. The event marked a significant political moment for the BJP government in Tripura as the party further strengthened its position in the 60-member Assembly.
Jahar Chakraborti emerged victorious in the April 9 by-election held in Dharmanagar following the demise of former Speaker and MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen. His victory was regarded as historic after he defeated CPI(M) candidate Amitabha Datta by a record margin, reaffirming the BJP’s dominance in the constituency. Following the by-election result, the BJP’s tally in the Assembly increased to 33 seats, giving the party a stronger legislative presence in the state.
The ceremony was attended by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Rajya Sabha MP and Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy, cabinet ministers, MLAs, and leaders from opposition parties including CPI(M) and Congress. The presence of leaders from across political lines reflected the importance attached to the occasion.

Speaking after taking oath, Jahar Chakraborti assured the people of Dharmanagar that development would remain his top priority. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and law and order in the constituency, stating that public welfare and administrative stability would guide his tenure as MLA.
Chief Minister Manik Saha congratulated the newly sworn-in legislator and expressed confidence in his leadership abilities. He said Chakraborti’s commitment to public service and welfare-oriented governance would help accelerate development in Dharmanagar. According to the Chief Minister, the new MLA’s dedication and political experience would contribute significantly toward addressing the aspirations of local residents and ensuring progress across the constituency.
Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury also extended his congratulations, saying Chakraborti had accepted the responsibility of fulfilling the dreams and expectations of the people of Dharmanagar. He added that the BJP leader would continue the unfinished developmental vision of late Biswa Bandhu Sen and work toward taking the constituency to greater heights.
Rajib Bhattacharjee echoed similar sentiments and stated that the people of Dharmanagar had placed their trust in Chakraborti with strong expectations for development and inclusive governance. He expressed confidence that the new MLA would represent every section of society with sincerity and dedication.
